Catch this weekend's Ensemble Companio Concert, Peter Stoltzfus Berton's Hereford Variations, and update to our roof project in this week's Evangelist: https://saintjohns-newport.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/The-Second-Sunday-of-Easter-April-28-2019.pdf
We are getting a restored church roof thanks to the generosity of a $916,000 grant from the McBean Charitable Trust. The future grandmother of one of the McBean trustees was a bridesmaid at this wedding. The bridesmaid was the groom’s sister. (The bride’s full name was Ellen Tuck French, but went by Elsie.)

Ah, the life of a parish priest in Newport. The rector is giving the Invocation at the annual commissioning at two of the three yacht clubs in town. A sign that springtime is upon us! That, and Holy Week (Maundy Thursday & Good Friday @ 6:30 p.m., Saturday Easter Vigil @ 7:30 p.m., Easter Sunday @ 10 a.m. only).
🌺 🌸 🌼 Today is the last chance to make a donation to Easter flowers if you’d like to have your thanksgiving or memorial dedication listed in the Easter Vigil & Easter Day booklets! The suggested donation is $20, but any amount is gratefully received. 🌺 🌸 🌼

A generous donor bought two chairs that exactly match two other chairs we already possess. The catch: they have to be picked up from a warehouse in Danbury, CT. That’s “only” 2 1/2 hours from Newport, but who has five-plus hours to spare for such an errand? Any volunteers?

Happy Mardi Gras! What started out on Sunday as a grand Choral Matins service with English cathedral music ended with this grand procession with a New Orleans flavor.
At the end of Choral Matins yesterday, we all marched into the Guild Hall for our Mardi Gras brunch singing, “When The Saints Go Marching In.” This is what we mean by Serious Fun™—and rare footage of the rector clapping!
A bass from our adult choir rehearses his solo under the direction of Dr. Barry Rose in Tewkesbury Abbey.
We’re swingin’ at St. John’s!
Looking backwards makes us look forward even more to Easter!
Barn Dance!
Spontaneously singing at the Redwood Library in Newport celebrating "Do Lord Remember Me: The Black Church in Rhode Island." Can I get an "Amen?"
The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (Michaelmas) will be kept on Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., as well as with a special Evensong & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 4 p.m. that afternoon. Come one, come all!
A bit of video to give you a taste of this evening's Music on the Lawn. Hope to see everyone at the next one on August 18th at 6 p.m.!
The choir rehearsing Paul Halley's "Freedom Trilogy" for Peter Quire Day this Sunday at 10 a.m. Peter Quire was an African-American man who had worked on the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia before moving to Newport. The first services of the Episcopal mission to the Point neighborhood were held on July 11, 1875 in a room of "an unoccupied dwelling house" belonging to Peter & Harriet Quire on the corner of Third & Poplar. By year's end, the first church building (now our Guild Hall) had been built. By 1894, he and the rest of the congregation had moved into the Zabriskie Memorial Church. Thank you, Peter Quire, for your life and witness. Amazing grace, indeed.
